Group 4: Sciences

Chemistry

The structure and behaviour of matter - bonding, reactions, energetics, and organic chemistry, supported by practical work.

All subjects

Course overview

Chemistry studies the composition, structure, and transformation of matter. Students develop a quantitative, model-based understanding of why substances behave as they do, reinforced by laboratory investigation.

What you will study

  • Structure: atomic structure, the periodic table, and bonding.
  • Reactivity: energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox.
  • Organic chemistry: functional groups, reaction pathways, and mechanisms (extended at HL).
  • Quantitative chemistry: the mole, stoichiometry, and data analysis.
