Course overview
Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is an interdisciplinary course that bridges the natural sciences and the humanities. Students study ecosystems and environmental problems while weighing the social, ethical, economic, and political dimensions of how societies respond.
Because it is transdisciplinary, ESS can satisfy either Group 3 (Individuals & Societies) or Group 4 (Sciences) in the diploma - giving students flexibility in their subject combination.
What you will study
- Foundations: systems, sustainability, and environmental value systems.
- Ecosystems and ecology: energy, biodiversity, and population dynamics.
- Biodiversity and conservation.
- Water, food, and soil systems.
